Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ Physio)

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) refers to acute or chronic pain or dysfunction of the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Physiotherapists at Robina Physiotherapy have post graduate training in TMJ Physio and Jaw Pain. Patients may present with or without a referral by their Doctor, Dentist or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

At Robina Physio on the Gold Coast we provide an extensive assessment of the TMJ. This will include:

  • Thorough subjective history
  • Cervical spine and postural assessment
  • Assessment of the oral cavity (teeth, tongue and cheeks)
  • TMJ stability and movement assessment (inc loading patterns and ligament testing)
  • Neurodynamic assessment (inc trigeminal and facial nerves)

The TMJ and Jaw Pain Physio treatment provided at Robina Physio is equally extensive and highly effective. This may include:

  • Re-education of tongue positioning, breathing and postural control
  • Soft tissue release and manual therapy of the TMJ, cervical and thoracic spine
  • Dry needling / Acupuncture
  • Rocabado and mandibular stabilisation exercises
  • Advice about splint prescription (in conjunction with your dentist and/or Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon)
