Real Time Ultrasound

Ultrasound by Robina Physio

Real Time Ultrasound (RTUS) allows the physiotherapist to view your muscles from the outside (non-invasively) while they are working. Using this visual feedback, your physiotherapist instructs you on correct muscle activation. This technique is effective for retraining the deep muscles around your spine, pelvis and joints.

Some of the muscles around the trunk that provide core stability that may be assessed include:

  1. Pelvic Floor (PFM) – essentially acts as a hammock to hold up your pelvic organs and maintain continence. We can assess whether the PFM is being recruited and patterning in the correct way.
  2. Transversus Abdominus (TA) – is a deep abdominal muscle that plays a crucial role in helping to stabilise and support your spine and pelvis. We can easily view this muscle contracting on RTUS and guide your rehab with this real time feedback.
  3. Multifidus– are deep spinal muscles that help stabilise the each individual segment of your spinal column. We can assess their function and teach you how the retrain them back to normal strength.

You can book in for realtime ultrasound with any of our physiotherapists at Robina Physio on the Gold Coast and evaluate how your core stabilisers are contracting.
