Real Time Ultrasound

Real Time Ultrasound (RTUS) - Available from Robina Physio Centre, Gold CoastReal Time Ultrasound (RTUS) is new technology being used by physiotherapists. It allows the physiotherapist to “look” at your muscles, inside your body, from the outside (non-invasively) while they are working. The image on the screen provides visual feedback as your physiotherapist instructs you on correct muscle activation allowing you to effectively retrain the deep muscles around your spine and joints.

The pictures generated by the machine are like a movie of your muscles – “real time” images of your muscle function.
Some of the muscles around the trunk that provide core stability that may be assessed include:

  1. Pelvic Floor (PFM) – we can assess whether the PFM is moving in the right direction, and being recruited in the correct way.
  2. Transversus Abdominus (TA) – we can assess whether your “deep abdominals” are able to work to support your spine and pelvis.
  3. Multifidus– your spine also has deep muscles close to the spine that help stabilize the spine. In clients with back pain multifidus may not be functioning well, so we can assess their function and teach you how the retrain them back to normal strength.

You can book in for a realtime ultrasound session with any of our physiotherapists and evaluate how your core stabilisers are contracting.
